For Sir Nigel MacFarlane
On his Coronation Day, 19 Sep AS XLIV
Came forth did I, from past the mighty loch,
A belted Knight of ancient, distant lands;
With pride I rode, a noble of good stock,
Prowess to prove with broadsword in my hands,
Bold as is due and Chivalry demands.
To foreign lands I rode forth, there to reive
That riches and bright honour I'd receive.
What did I find? A land of wealth and peace
That gave right freely what I came to take
And more: the seannachies sing without cease
Of northern blood I own, and by this lake
A noble wife I found, a home to make.
And now a King in sovereign land I rise:
For southron come to reive—them this defies.
